Be An Upstander!

October is National Bullying Awareness Month

Bullying is a key social issue that impacts many kids and their ability to reach their full potential. Whether the bullying is physical, verbal or online, those who are bullied can suffer negative effects, including depression, poor performance in school, physical illness and increased risk for suicide.

Everyone involved with young people has a role to play in preventing this damaging behavior. One way you can help prevent bullying is by becoming an “upstander” – someone who recognizes when bullying is happening and safely works to stop it.

Promoting positive behaviors like being an upstander can be art of the solution to bullying. At the Y, modeling positive behaviors is foundation to everything we do. Our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility form the roots of our work, helping young people become the change makers our communities need to become stronger.

YMCAs nationwide work hard every day to provide safe spaces for children to grow and thrive. This is part of our commitment to helping develop and activate young people so they can transform communities today and in the future.

Three Actions Anyone Can Take to Prevent Bullying

1.) Treat Other Kindly & With Respect
2.) Interrupt & report Bullying Incidents
3.) Show support for the Bullied Person

Ways You Can Help Prevent Bullying

Any caring adult—parents, school staff, child care workers and others—can help prevent bullying incidents. This is what you can do, according to StopBullying.gov:

  • Help kids understand bullying. Talk about what bullying is and how to stand up to it safely. Tell kids bullying is unacceptable. Make sure kids know how to get help.
  • Keep the lines of communication open. Check in with kids often. Listen to them. Know their friends, ask about school, and understand their concerns.
  • Encourage kids to do what they love. Special activities, interests, and hobbies can boost confidence, help kids make friends, and protect them from bullying behavior.
  • Model how to treat others with kindness and respect.

The Tyler Clementi Foundation also has a number of ways individuals and entire communities can prevent bullying, such as the Million Upstander Movement Opens a new window and the #Day1 campaign Opens a new window.

The Hobart Family YMCA Bowl-a-Thon is back, and this year it’s bigger and better than ever before.

The Bowl-a-Thon allows our YMCA to continue our critical work serving the City of Hobart with programs and services focusing on Youth Development, Healthy Living & Social Responsibility. As our second largest annual fundraising event, the Bowl-a- Thon keeps the Y’s services available to those who need it most. This year, we’re aiming to raise a record-breaking $10,000, and we need your help

Grab 5 pals and sign up to show off your bowling skills! Or you can support a great cause by pledging toward an existing team or bowler!

We’ve compiled this handy list of Frequently Asked Questions, but reach out to us anytime at asantos@hobartymca.org if we can help in any way to get you and your teams set up to be the best and happiest Y bowlers and fundraisers ever!

When and where is the Bowl-a-Thon?
The Bowl-A-Thon will be held on Saturday, November 23rd, 2019; 99 S Hobart Rd, Hobart, IN 46342. Check in is from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm and the bowling begins at 1:00 pm.

So… why exactly are we bowling?
Every November, we host our Annual Bowl-A-Thon — this fundraising tradition for over 50 years! These events allow us to have fun connecting with community while raising funds so we can continue to serve our neighbors in need. Bowl; fund Y

scholarship program; build our community. It’s that simple.

I’m in! How do I sign up?
It’s easy to get involved – Snag a Team Packet from the Y Welcome Center, recruit five (5) other energetic people like yourself for a super team of six (6) bowlers dedicated to raising funds for the Y AND have a GREAT time doing it!

Is there a fee to sign up as a bowling team?
There is a registration fee of $50 per team that we encourage you to pay early to reserve your team lane.

Is there a deadline for registration?
Yes, please turn in your entry fee with team captain agreement to the Hobart YMCA by Saturday, November 2nd, 2019. There are only 16 lanes available and we will do our best to make sure we accommodate everyone who wants to join us!

What are the requirements for a bowling team captain?

  1. Recruiting five (5) other energetic people to form a super team dedicated to raising funds for the Y, and having a great time doing
  2. Turn in your team commitment sheets and $50 entry fees to the Hobart YMCA by Saturday, November 2nd,
  3. Motivate members of your team including yourself, to secure donations from friends, relatives, etc. The team goal is a minimum of $600.00 ($100 per team member.) Let your team know you are bowling to raise funds for the YMCA. Ask them to donate a specific amount, $5, $10, $20 or more – Every bit helps!
  4. Accept the prospects donations and record the transaction on your pledge sheet(s).
  5. Be sure each team member brings their pledge sheets and collected money to the Bowl- A-Thon. Turn in all pledge sheet(s) and donations and you are done!

How many people can be on a bowling team?
Each lane can accommodate 6 people, so we encourage teams to not have more than 6 people per lane who plan to bowl, if they want their score recorded. If you don’t mind not having your score totaled up and want to participate in the fun come on by!

What are team member responsibilities?

  1. Agree to solicit donations totaling at least $100 from friends and associates. Please request Paid in Advanced donations. Ask them to donate a specific amount, $5, $10, $20 or more – Every bit helps!

  3. Bring your pledge sheets and collected donations to the Bowl-A-Thon, Thursday, November 15th, 2018, 6:30 pm at Cressmoor
  4. Have fun!

When should I turn in my donations?
You may bring in donations anytime to our Welcome Center staff during normal business hours. We will also collect donations by cash, check or debit/credit card onsite at the event. You can also email Aimee at asantos@hobartymca.org with donation and payment questions.

Who should the donation checks be made out to?
Checks need to be made out to “Hobart Family YMCA.”

How many games do we bowl?
Three (3).

How are the bowling games played?
We will be bowling by “No Tap” rules. Nine (9) pins down on first roll will count the same as a strike. All games will be played by the “NO TAP” rules. “NO TAP” may increase scores somewhat and will help move the game along, giving time for each bowler to complete 3 games.

What happens if I’m a bad bowler?
We embrace ALL our bowlers, regardless of bowling skill! Neither your fundraising nor your importance in building power through funding is connected to your bowling score. Bring on all the gutter balls you’ve got — we’ll still be cheering you on!

I can’t attend the Bowl-a-Thon event, but still want to fundraise for the Y! Can I still participate?
YES, PLEASE! We’d love those who want to support the Y and its mission to participate in fundraising, even if you can’t join us in at the Bowl-A-Thon! We are also offering sponsorship opportunities. We are also, always accepting donations to help fund our Y. You can donate online or here at the Y with the Welcome Center.

Please share these FAQs with your teammates, friends, and anyone interested in the Bowl-a-Thon. And as always, reach out to us at asantos@hobartymca.org if you have any questions or suggestions for how to make this event an even bigger success!

Let your children learn, grow and thrive with us!

The Hobart Family YMCA Developmental Preschool offers such incredible programs for both their 3 year class and Pre-K class. My husband and I first discovered this program over five years ago when looking for a school for our daughter (who is now in second grade). We were nervous about finding a school that offered what we were looking for. When we came across the YMCA program, it was a no-brainer to enroll her. The fact that they have an open door policy is great!

It helped us with the nerves of leaving our little in someone else’s care. Parents are not only able, but encouraged to participate and help out in class throughout the school year. It’s so fun to take part in class parties, volunteer to read to the class, or help the teachers with a project. An added bonus is the fact that swimming is incorporated into the curriculum and again, parents are encouraged to get in the pool with their child.

Our daughter learned so much in her first year in the pre-school, that we put basically no thought into enrolling her into the Pre-K class. The teachers take many different approaches to teaching and make learning super fun for their students. By the time our daughter finished the Pre-K program, we knew that she was more than ready to start Kindergarten. Her teachers had taught her what she needed to know and more!

And the preschool graduation they have, THE CUTEST! We were so impressed with the YMCA  Preschool while our daughter was there, that we chose them again for our son. He is currently in his second year at the Y Preschool enrolled in the Pre-K program and loving it! He’s learning a lot, making new friends, and looks forward to going to school. I would highly recommend the Hobart Family YMCA  Preschool to any parent looking for a school for their child. Our expectations were not only met but far exceeded!
